Announcing release of Host Integration Server 2016 CU4

We are excited to announce the release of Host Integration Server 2016 CU4.

Cumulative Update 4 contains all functional and security fixes for customer-reported issues in HIS 2016, including those fixes previously released in CU1 through CU3. We recommend upgrading to CU4, to remain current on the latest fixes. Please test CU4 prior to deploying into production.

Augmented reality remote learning with Hololens2

Chemical engineers at Imperial College London have been transforming how they teach practical lab skills to students based remotely, as part of the new multi-mode offering for students in the new academic year.

New and returning chemical engineering undergraduates will have the opportunity to use augmented reality (AR) to complete lab-based experiments, using Microsoft HoloLens technology to connect and interact from wherever they are in the world.

Practical lab skills

Lab work is an essential component of the chemical engineering MEng degree and normally requires students to perform experiments in person. As well as learning practical skills, students develop their ability to work in teams and problem solve, by applying theory-based learning to real engineering problems.

Ensuring that more than 600 students from around 69 countries receive the same high-quality learning experience that they would have pre-COVID requires a better solution than simply moving content online.

To meet these new needs, a team of Teaching Fellows and future chemical engineers have developed the CREATE Lab (Chemeng Remote Experience Augmented through TEchnology Laboratory).

CREATE Lab enables students to participate in their chosen lab project remotely using three key pieces of technology: Microsoft Hololens headsets, controllable cameras and QR codes.

One member of each student team will be physically present in the lab and supported by a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Wearing the Hololens headset, they will connect to their remote colleagues using Dynamic Guides, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft stream what they’re seeing in real time. Their team members will be able to provide both verbal and written instructions and together they will perform experiments on working machinery and rigs.

To further support the virtual experience, remote access cameras have been mounted throughout the labs and will continuously stream video footage. Students will be able to move the camera and zoom in and out to easily capture equipment, readings and other essential components. Camera pre-sets will also allow students to ‘travel’ between different key experiment locations in the lab.

QR codes are strategically placed in positions of certain processes or equipment pieces and, with the help of the Microsoft HoloLens, allow students to access relevant information regarding their tasks. Students both in person and remotely can easily scan these codes with mobile phones which will take them to informative videos and information packs. To complement these, the team have also developed a set of dynamic guides which provide a step-by-step instructions on how to operate certain pieces of equipment.

Thomas Cheng, one of the undergraduates involved in the project, said:

The CREATE Labs bring flexibility with lab work in a way I have never seen before. The use of technology is refreshing and with the use of augmented reality, I would say even the experience for those within the lab has been enhanced. For those working remotely, it is almost like you’re standing there in person, able to work with your group face to face, just like before, but with access to content that helps you understand why you are actually doing the experiment.”

The project forms part of a wider plan to transform the Department of Chemical Engineering curriculum. The goal is to introduce advanced learning technologies and replace the traditional way of teaching lab work, to enhance the student learning experience.

Dr Clemens Brechtelsbauer, Director of Chemical Engineering Education, explained:

“Remote learning has received increased attention as a result of the pandemic, but it’s something we’ve been exploring for some time as it provides an excellent opportunity for students to prepare themselves for working in industry. “Often our students go on to work in environments where they are controlling machinery remotely, so it’s important that we provide them with this experience during their degree.”

Files from the internet and other potentially unsafe locations can contain viruses, worms, or other kinds of malware that can harm your users’ computer and data. To help protect your users, Office opens files from potentially unsafe locations in Application Guard, a secure container that is isolated from the device through hardware-based virtualization. When Office opens files in Application Guard, users can securely read, edit, print, and save those files without having to re-open files outside the container. This feature will be off by default. Request user validation to reduce your SOC workload in Cloud App Security

Welcome to Automation in Cloud App Security by Caroline Lee & Sebastien Molendijk

This is the first post in the “Automation in Cloud App Security,” series where we’ll cover different features of Cloud App Security by showcasing common use cases, advanced solutions and share what we’ve learned while working with customers who are actively using the product. Each post will be paired with a video where we will walkthrough the flow and how to use it in MCAS. This post will cover how to auto-remediate alerts using Power Automate specifically within Information Protection.

These days companies are using so many different cloud applications to store their data. The problem is how can you keep track of what’s being shared? Who has access to this data? How do you better protect sensitive files from being leaked? In large corporations where thousands of users are constantly uploading, downloading, and sharing files it is difficult to keep track and take action when needed. This is where catching and resolving alerts via Information Protection in Microsoft Cloud App Security (MCAS) enters the picture.

Imagine a scenario where you have an internal employee sending a time-sensitive presentation to a contractor to finish but the moment the contractor clicks to open the file they cannot access it because of a file policy in place to make sensitive information private. We have all been in this situation before and know how incredibly frustrating this could be and result in alternative routes that could jeopardize sensitive data.

By leveraging Power Automate in MCAS, instead of automatically making the file private, we can configure a workflow to send an email to the employee sharing the file asking them to validate if the file can be shared. This solution gives power back to the business and allows them to make the informed decision when normally it is the IT department handling these types of requests with little to no context.

This workflow also helps to educate users on safe data practices as data leaks happen mostly because people are unaware of the information they are sharing.

Before we go into the Power Automate flow, we’ll quickly review Governance Actions. Cloud App Security connects to a number of applications through our API based app connectors which gives us more control and visibility for those apps. This could range from making files private, removing external users, putting files in quarantine, or even applying Azure Information Protection labels. But these actions are a one size fits all approach where for some users may not be the right fit for their policies. Instead, we can send alerts to Power Automate where the possibilities go way past the realm of what API connectors allow us to do.

In Power Automate, you can configure flows to request additional user validation via emails, creating ServiceNow or Jira tickets, send emails laced with conditional statements and much more. It has the capability to integrate with over 250 applications so there are a ton of different solutions you can create.

Playbook Configuration:

In MCAS, navigate to settings and click on “Security extensions.”
Click on the blue “+,” button to generate an API token & URL
Note: It is extremely important to keep your token & URL in safe place because if another user gains access to them, they will be able to log into MCAS with your permissions.
After creating your token, navigate to Power Automate, create a new Flow and choose your Cloud App Security trigger.
Input a connection name and the API key you generated from MCAS and choose an action, save this flow.
Navigate back to MCAS and click on the “Playbooks,” tab, this is where you’ll be able to see all the flows you have configured in Power Automate.

Let’s take a look at an example.

Remove sensitive file sharing after requesting user validation

We’ll create a new policy that looks for credit card and social security information that is publicly shared by a specific person (good for testing). Instead of triggering a governance action for this policy, we will send the alerts to a flow we’ve created in Power Automate.

In the MCAS alerts, we can see the specified user’s file that triggered an alert for the external sharing of credit card information. From the end user perspective, the user will receive a request for validation in the form of an email and will be able to take action based on the options configured in the flow.

After choosing the action and navigating back to MCAS, the alert has been resolved due to the flow we created to auto-remediate it. By resolving alerts via the flow, this allows administrators to focus on the important alerts in their environment. The action will also be tracked in the governance log where administrators will be able to maintain visibility into the actions occurring in your cloud environment.
